Which format does the Unternehmensregister expect?
The Publikations-Plattform accepts several formats. What matters is what happens next: XML is taken over as is, PDF and Office files are converted by the operator for a charge.
Which formats are accepted
The terms of use name three routes: XML or XBRL following the Bundesanzeiger Verlag's schema, XHTML with iXBRL in the ESEF format for domestic issuers, and Word, Excel, RTF or PDF.
The register stores everything in its structured format. XML following the schema is therefore not the only admissible format, but the only one that needs no conversion.

PDF is accepted, but costs extra
A PDF is accepted if it is readable, copyable and printable, unencrypted, without JavaScript or forms, A4 and at most 25 MB. A PDF order may not mix in other formats.
The operator then converts it into its format and charges a private-law fee on top of the register fee.
What conversion costs
For Word, RTF, Excel and PDF the operator charges 1.75 ct per visible character without spaces, plus VAT. If any part of the order is scanned, the whole order costs 2.50 ct per character instead of 1.75 ct.
Filing XML following the schema avoids this charge. Graphics cost €20 each plus VAT on both routes.
